GrowSurf
About
SaaS referral tool priced per participant (anyone holding a link), from $179/mo, with billing-credit rewards on Stripe, Chargebee and Recurly and real 1099 handling. Also the cheapest affiliate-program entry in the directory: $0 + 3% with everything unlocked.
GrowSurf is a referral tool for SaaS, priced on how many people hold a referral link rather than how many of them do anything with it. That's the whole listing in one sentence, and the rest is the consequences. It also has, almost as an afterthought, the cheapest way into an affiliate program in this directory: $0 a month plus 3% of referred revenue, with every feature unlocked.
I haven't run a program on GrowSurf. This is a research listing, from growsurf.com (pricing, integrations, docs) and reviews on G2 and Capterra. Third-party claims are marked.
Who it's for
SaaS and subscription businesses on Stripe, Chargebee or Recurly that want an in-app refer-a-friend loop: give the referrer a credit, give the friend a discount, track it against the billing system. GrowSurf is built for that, with Stripe, Chargebee and Recurly coupons and credits as native reward types.
Companies that want tax handled. GrowSurf collects W-9s and W-8s, holds payouts until they're complete, and prepares and files 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC. Few tools in this category do the filing.
Anyone who wants to run an affiliate program for nothing up front. The affiliate-program plan is $0 plus 3% of collected referral revenue, all features included.
Who should skip it
Stores. There's no Shopify or WooCommerce integration, and GrowSurf doesn't pretend otherwise.
Anyone on Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Kajabi or Teachable. Not supported.
Anyone whose referral program will have a lot of passive participants. If every user gets a referral link by default, every user is a "participant," and participants are what you pay for. More below.
Anyone without a developer. Setup is JavaScript and webhooks, and the reviews are consistent that it's confusing.
Pricing, decoded
Two products with different pricing, and the difference matters.
Referral programs, priced per participant:
- Startup: $179 a month, or $125 on annual ($1,503.60 a year). 2,500 participants, 2 programs, 2 seats.
- Business: $449, or $314 annual. 10,000 participants, 5 programs, all integrations, custom domain, remove branding.
- $649 for 25,000 participants, $879 for 50,000, custom above 150,000.
- 14-day trial, no card. 30-day refund on your most recent payment.
Affiliate programs: $0 a month plus 3% of collected referral revenue. All paid features. The 3% is non-refundable.
Two things about the participant model.
First, a participant is anyone with a referral link. Not anyone who referred someone; anyone who could. If your app hands every user a link in the settings page, your participant count is your user count, and a 12,000-user app with 40 active referrers is on the $649 plan for the 40. That's the complaint behind the 2021 Capterra reviewer who said tracked-user pricing didn't suit a low-engagement program. Design the program so people opt in to a link, or budget for the tier your whole user base lands you on.
Second, auto-upgrade is on by default. Cross the participant limit and GrowSurf moves you to the next tier. You can turn it off, and you should, the day you sign up, because a plan that upgrades itself is a plan whose price you don't set. This is the default effect again: the vendor picks the setting that's good for the vendor, and most customers never change it.
Now the affiliate plan, because it's the quiet bargain. $0 plus 3%: at $5,000 a month in affiliate-referred revenue, you pay $150. Rewardful at that volume is $49 flat, Tolt is in the same range. At $20,000 a month you pay $600, which is more than any of them. So GrowSurf's affiliate plan is the cheapest start and the most expensive scale, and the crossover with a flat tool is about $1,600 a month in referred revenue against a $49 plan and $3,300 against a $99 plan. Below that, GrowSurf is nearly free. Above it, move.
What it does well
Billing-native rewards. Stripe, Chargebee and Recurly coupons and credits as reward types means a SaaS referral program can pay out in product, with no cash moving, and the credit lands on the invoice automatically. For a subscription business that's the right reward, and most referral tools make you do it by hand.
Tax handling. W-9 and W-8 collection, payouts held until the forms are in, 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC prepared and filed (the filing is charged separately on Business and Custom). Referral Rock has a $599 limit setting and nothing else; GrowSurf does the paperwork.
Payout choice: PayPal, Wise, Tango Card, Tremendous, plus the billing credits.
The integration list is long for SaaS: Stripe, Chargebee, Recurly, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier, Salesforce, Intercom, Mailchimp, Segment, Mixpanel, Make, Pabbly and around 45 more. API and webhooks on every plan.
Setup: 4 out of 5
JavaScript snippet, SDK, webhooks to your billing system. The G2 reviews from January 2026 call the setup UX unclear and the campaign setup confusing; one wants CSV bulk approval because manual approvals are slow; a 2020 Capterra reviewer found the tiers confusing; a 2024 one called it limiting and not intuitive, while praising support. Setup is a developer's afternoon plus a founder's week of working out the campaign logic, and the manual approval queue is a recurring chore unless you automate it.
Lock-in: 2 out of 5
What gets you out: API and webhooks on every plan, monthly billing, a 30-day refund on the latest payment, no percentage fee on the referral plans to reconcile. Export isn't documented as a button, but the API is the export.
What keeps you in: the billing-credit rewards, which are the reason to use it and which other tools don't replicate; the referral links and widget, which are GrowSurf-hosted; and on the affiliate plan, the 3% you've paid, which doesn't come back.
Two. The API gets you out; the billing integration is what you'd miss.
Gotchas
- You pay for participants, not referrers. Anyone with a link counts.
- Auto-upgrade is on by default. Turn it off on day one.
- Startup is $179 a month on monthly, $125 on annual; the annual is $1,503.60 up front.
- The 3% affiliate fee is non-refundable.
- Setup is a 4. JavaScript, SDK, webhooks, and a confusing campaign builder by consistent account.
- Manual approvals are slow without automation (G2, 2026).
- 1099 filing is charged separately on Business and Custom.
- No Shopify, WooCommerce, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Kajabi or Teachable.
- Export is API, not a button. Fine if you have a developer; a project if you don't.
- Tango Card issues reported by one 2021 reviewer; a second rail is wise.
Integrations
Stripe, Chargebee, Recurly, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier, Salesforce, Intercom, Mailchimp, Segment, Mixpanel, Make, Pabbly and roughly 45 others. API and webhooks on all plans. Payouts via PayPal, Wise, Tango Card, Tremendous, and Stripe, Chargebee or Recurly credits.
Not supported: Shopify, WooCommerce, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Kajabi, Teachable.
If you're leaving
Pull participants, referrals and rewards through the API before you cancel, because there's no documented export button. Settle outstanding cash rewards; billing-credit rewards already landed on invoices and need nothing. Turn off the widget and redirect the referral links. If you're on the affiliate plan, the 3% already paid stays paid. Cancel within 30 days of a payment if you want that payment back.
And if you'd rather not do any of this yourself, moving a program without losing its affiliates is a service I offer.
Verdict
My opinion, labelled as such: GrowSurf is the right referral tool for a SaaS that wants to reward in billing credits and have the tax paperwork done, and the wrong one for anyone who hasn't thought hard about who counts as a participant. Price it on your user count, not your referrer count, and turn off auto-upgrade before you do anything else.
The affiliate plan is a different animal and a good one: $0 plus 3% with everything unlocked is the cheapest way in this directory to find out whether affiliates work for your product. Run it until you're past a few thousand a month in referred revenue, then move to Rewardful or Tolt at a flat price. And if your referrers are customers with relationships rather than users with links, Referral Rock prices on members you choose, not on everyone who got a link by default.
