ThriveCart

ThriveCart is a checkout tool with the most capable affiliate centre of any platform that bundles one in. Two tiers, JV revenue splits, per-affiliate rates, rules that raise or cut a rate on performance, PayPal payouts that happen on their own and claw themselves back on a refund. If you sell courses or digital products and you'd rather not run a separate affiliate tool, this is the built-in to beat.

The catch is that none of it is on the plan most people buy. The affiliate centre lives on Pro, and in 2026 ThriveCart stopped being the lifetime deal everybody knew and became a subscription.

I haven't run a program on ThriveCart. This is a research listing, from thrivecart.com, its checkout pages, and the ThriveCart help centre. Third-party claims are marked.

The history

ThriveCart launched in 2016 out of the UK, built by Josh Bartlett, and for most of its life it sold one way: a lifetime licence, around $495 for the cart and a couple of hundred more for Pro, promoted almost entirely by affiliates on a fat one-time commission. It became the cart of choice for course creators because the price was paid once and the affiliate program came in the box.

The lifetime deal was the growth engine, and it's worth seeing why. A one-time price with no renewal is a one-way door for the buyer: pay now, own it forever, and the regret risk is capped at the price. That's loss aversion working for the vendor, because the alternative (a subscription you might cancel) feels like a running loss, and a lifetime deal feels like a thing you own. Every "pay once" tool in this directory, from iDevAffiliate to EzyGold, sells on the same instinct. ThriveCart just did it with better affiliates.

In 2023 the company was reported to have been acquired by LTV SaaS Growth Fund, a private-equity buyer of software businesses (third-party; I couldn't find a first-party announcement). In 2026 the pricing page gained monthly subscriptions and a 30-day trial. Private-equity buys lifetime-deal business; lifetime deal becomes subscription. If you've read the FirstPromoter listing, you've seen this film.

Who it's for

Course creators, coaches and digital-product sellers who want checkout, upsells, bumps and an affiliate program in one tool and are happy to run it on Pro.

Anyone who runs JV launches. Revenue-split JV contracts and second-tier commissions are both here, which the SaaS-native affiliate tools mostly aren't, and which otherwise means a marketplace like JVZoo.

Sellers whose affiliates live on PayPal and who want the money to move without a monthly payout ritual.

Who should skip it

Anyone on Standard. There's no affiliate centre on it, monthly or lifetime. If affiliates are the point, you're a Pro customer from day one.

Anyone whose affiliates don't use PayPal. Automatic payouts are PayPal only; no PayPal on the affiliate's side means manual for that affiliate.

Anyone who needs 1099s. ThriveCart collects W-9s and W-8BENs if you ask it to, and does nothing with them.

Anyone selling SaaS or subscriptions billed outside ThriveCart. It tracks ThriveCart checkouts and nothing else. Stripe-billed software needs Rewardful or similar.

Pricing, decoded

  • Standard: $47 a month, or $495 one-time. Checkout, bumps, upsells, no affiliate centre.
  • Pro: $87 a month. Adds the affiliate centre, plus the Pro extras (custom domain, dunning, client usage, business projections). A lifetime Pro option still exists, per the FAQ, but the price isn't on a page I could fetch. The long-running figure was about $690 total; confirm on the checkout before you assume it.
  • 30-day trial on the monthly plans. 0% fees on sales.

Worked example. A course business wanting affiliates: $87 a month, so $1,044 a year, forever. Against the old world where you paid roughly $690 once and were done, the subscription costs more from month nine. Against the alternative of Standard lifetime at $495 plus a separate affiliate tool, say Affonso at €15 a month, you'd pay $495 up front and about $190 a year after, which is cheaper than Pro monthly by year one and a lot cheaper by year three. The built-in is better than Affonso at JV splits and two tiers; it's not better at being cheap.

If the lifetime Pro is still purchasable at anything near the old price, buy that. Lifetime deals from a company that just moved to subscriptions tend not to stay on the menu.

The affiliate centre

Here's why I called it the most capable built-in. Per pricing option (not just per product) you can set a percentage or fixed commission, a separate rate for the initial sale and for rebills, a commission on the bump offer, and a second-tier commission, as a percentage or fixed amount, with an optional expiry from one to 365 days. Each affiliate can have a custom rate. And there are automation rules: raise an affiliate's rate when they pass a sales threshold, cut it when their refund rate climbs, change their payout timing based on performance. That's the gamification lever EzyGold makes you configure by hand, built into a cart.

JV contracts split revenue between partners at the point of sale, the same trick that made JVZoo worth using, without the marketplace. Cookie length is vendor-set per product, first- or last-click, your choice.

Affiliates get one universal ThriveCart login that works across every vendor they promote. For the affiliate that's convenient. For you it means you can't edit their details, and removing them from your program doesn't remove their account. The affiliate is ThriveCart's customer, not yours.

Payouts

PayPal, automatic, with three timings: instant, after a delay you set, or a split (some now, the rest later). The feature that makes it work is the one that makes it risky: on a refund, ThriveCart automatically claws the commission back from the affiliate's PayPal, and if the balance isn't there, from their backup funding source.

Think about how that lands. An affiliate who was paid $50 instantly on Tuesday gets $50 pulled from their bank on Friday because the customer refunded. Kahneman and Tversky's loss aversion says the pull hurts roughly twice as much as the payment pleased, and the affiliate didn't do anything wrong. Instant payouts are a marketing feature for recruiting affiliates; a delay of 30 to 45 days, past your refund window, is the setting that keeps them. ThriveCart lets you choose, so choose the delay.

You can require affiliates to connect PayPal before they see their link, which saves the "where's my money" email later. No PayPal on your product, no automatic payouts at all.

Lock-in: 3 out of 5

What gets you out: CSV export of commissions and payouts, CSV import of affiliates, the cart embeds on your own site, and monthly billing on the subscription plans. The affiliates' universal logins survive your departure.

What keeps you in: the affiliate program only tracks ThriveCart checkouts, so leaving the cart means leaving the program, and your affiliate links die with it. Drop from Pro to Standard and the program disappears. The commission rules, JV contracts and two-tier structures have few destinations. And ThriveCart owns the affiliate relationship through the universal login.

Three. Easy to export, hard to recreate elsewhere.

Gotchas

  • No affiliate centre on Standard. Pro or nothing.
  • Lifetime deal gone from the headline pricing. Lifetime Pro may still exist; price not published.
  • Instant payouts claw back. Set a delay past your refund window or expect angry affiliates.
  • PayPal only for automation. Non-PayPal affiliates are manual.
  • Tax forms are collected, not used. W-9 and W-8BEN upload is optional, unverified, and produces no 1099. Requiring forms also disables auto-approval.
  • You can't edit or delete affiliate accounts. Universal login; they're ThriveCart's users.
  • Tracks ThriveCart checkouts only. External sales pages are fine; external checkouts aren't.
  • Export is partial. Commissions and payouts, yes. A full affiliate list export isn't documented.
  • Private-equity owned (reported). The subscription switch is the first visible change.

Integrations

ThriveCart is the checkout. Processors: Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net, Apple Pay and Google Pay through Stripe. Email and membership: most of the usual list through native integrations and Zapier. Affiliate tracking: only ThriveCart's own. If you want a separate affiliate tool on top, FirstPromoter has a native ThriveCart integration.

Not supported: tracking sales from any other checkout; Stripe-billed SaaS; Shopify.

If you're leaving

Export commissions and payouts to CSV. Note which affiliates are owed money and settle it before you drop the plan, because the moment the affiliate centre goes, so does your view of the balances. Build the new program, email affiliates their new links, and expect to recreate two-tier and JV structures by hand or flatten them. If you're moving to another cart, the affiliate rebuild is the bigger job than the checkout rebuild.

Verdict

My opinion, labelled as such: for a course or digital-product business that sells through its own checkout and wants affiliates without a second tool, ThriveCart Pro is the strongest built-in in this directory, and it's not close. JV splits, two tiers, performance rules and automatic PayPal payouts are a lot to get in a cart, and the setup is a two out of five.

The reservations are about money and ownership. $87 a month is the price of the affiliate centre now, which is more than Standard plus a lightweight affiliate tool, and the affiliate accounts belong to ThriveCart. If the lifetime Pro is still buyable, that changes the arithmetic; ask before the monthly.

If you want a built-in affiliate program for nothing, Systeme.io includes one on its free plan, with less of everything above. If you want JV splits and a marketplace to go with them, JVZoo. And if your product is SaaS billed through Stripe, the cart isn't the question; FirstPromoter or Rewardful is.
